Newsletter 32 – 5/29/18

Weekly Highlights

This week we spent time wrapping up our Pots & Pans friendship partners. Students played games, did some science experiments, and shared about their lives.

We also focused on wrapping up our Interview Essays. Students moved their essays from paper copy to typed up on Google Classroom. We are introducing a checklist today that they will use to revise and finish their pieces.

We also finished up our reflection conference preparation, NWEA tests, and started thinking about the MAW.

This week we’re going to be focusing on…

  • Completing interview essays
  • Finishing the third reading assignment for book clubs
  • Completing all NWEA tests
  • Finish P3 conference plans and products
  • Forming MAW (Museum of Authentic Work – June 12th – a show of all our work this year) committees and starting to develop our exhibits.

Homework — This week we will NOT have written assignments for book clubs. We are going to ask that kids work on their interview essays (these are based on google classroom, but we can send paper copies as well) with a goal of completion. We are also going to ask that kids spend time at home with you discussing and practicing their workshop and WHY they are teaching what they hope to for our P3 conference.

Conference Dates– We will be hosting a conference at the Monroe County Public Library on June 5th and 6th. Students will need a packed lunch (or one from school) on Tuesday. Students will be teaching and presenting information related to healthy relationships.

Book Swap – We’d like to try out 5/6’s first ever Book Swap! This year, on the last day of school, we are going to have an event where kids can take home a set amount of books that have been donated. This will provide them with some summer reading opportunities as well as a way us all to potentially do some cleaning. And that’s where you come in – we are asking families to do some sprucing and cleaning up of your at-home bookshelves – checking to see if there are any titles that can be donated and be used by someone else. Please send these books in any time in the next weeks and contact Kalei with any questions.

Questions to Ask Your Child at Home:

  • How did you feel about the “pots & pans” work?
  • What was something important you learned from the person you interviewed?
  • How do you feel (generally) about the end of the school year in the classroom?
